The Leinster Leader is inviting its readers to pay tribute to the late Dermot Earley Snr, a man who made a huge contribution to the community of Kildare, the GAA, his country and beyond.

Lieutenant General Dermot Earley was born in 1948 in Roscommon and joined the Defence Forces as a cadet in 1965.

He had a distinguished military career including an appointment as Instructor at the Army School of Physical Culture (ASPC) in 1969 at the age of 21.

He commanded the 27 Infantry Battalion on the border with Northern Ireland. In 2001 he was promoted to Colonel and held the positions of Directors of Administration and Personnel before being selected for promotion to Brigadier General in December 2003.

He was promoted to Major General in Feb 2004 and was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff.

  • A Roscommon Legend we will never forget

Our thoughts and prayers go to Dermot's mother Kitty, his wife Mary and all his entire family on their terrible lost.

Whenever Dermot came back to his roots in Gorthaganny - you would feel so honoured to meet such an outstanding gentleman who put both gorthaganny and Roscommon on the world map. He had such a strong handshake and he always had a word for everyone young and old alike. We cried the day he retired from the Roscommon football team and to see the opposition team and all his teammates carry him shoulder high off the field was a testiment of the great gentleman he was and how highly he was respected by everyone. We were so proud to know him and so prould of the goals he reached in his army career - no one deserved it more than Dermot.

He will always be our Hero and a True Legend to us in Gorthaganny and Roscommon and a man we will never forget. When we travel abroad or to football matches and people ask us where we're from - we say " Dermot Earley's village - Gorthaganny" with a smile.

God Rest you Dermot - Thanks for all the memories.
